Ex-Jubaland Security Minister Departs on First Trip to Ethiopia Since Defection

Jubaland

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Former security minister of Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Jubaland has departed on his first trip to Ethiopia since surrendering to the federal government in March.

Abdirashid Janan was accompanied by the state minister of public transport Abdirahman Kulmiye Hersi and other government officials and is expected to meet with Ethiopian officials.

He will be discussing the current situation in Gedo and military manouvers launched by Jubaland forces in region with Ethiopian officials, according to Mogadishu-based Dalsan Radio.

Ethiopia has thousands of troops stationed in a number of cities in the strife-torn region, who are helping Somali government troops to defend their bases from Al-Shabaab and Jubaland forces.

Janan, who had earlier been implicated in human rights atrocities committed in Gedo region, did not spoke to media over his trip, which comes amid spiraling tensions in the region over increasing Kenyan air strikes and blockade that continues to cripple the economy.
