MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Mayor of Somalia’s capital threatened on Thursday that opposition leaders will be captured and killed if they try to create unrest, hours after 14 presidential candidates running against the incumbent president in upcoming elections concluded a six-day conference.
Over the past few days, opposition presidential candidates have been raising concerns that Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and his government planned to incite violence against them after convening a major conference that brought together opposition figures, civil society members, MPs and representatives of the international community.
The Mayor of Mogadishu Omar Filish said the opposition presidential candidates will be “captured and killed wherever they are found if they try to destabilize the city”.
Mr Filish was giving a speech at Hawiye tribal conference organized by the federal government in which attendees expressed support for the current administration and opposed to a communiqué issued by opposition presidential candidates. He told the attendees that the opposition leaders were “unable to spur chaos but were only showing their masters that they made progress”.
Opposition leaders have not immediately commented on the mayor’s statement.
