MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Two Somali army soldiers were executed on Tuesday morning for the gang-rape and murder of a 10 year old boy in July, officials said.
The two soldiers were paraded in the outskirts of the town before Southwest state firing squad carried out the execution.
The execution has come following pressure from local religious scholars and elders as rape assaults perpetrated by government troops have spiraled out of the control in the past few months.
A Quran seminary school male teacher was raped on Sunday by unidentified gunmen thought to be government soldiers and he later succumbed to injuries as a result of the assault.
Another young boy was raped in the town on the same day, who is currently in a critical health condition at a hospital in Baidoa.
Since the Somali government backed by US and African Union troops retook the town from Al-Shabaab armed group in early 2012, dozens of rape cases were reported from Baidoa, mostly perpetrated by Somali army members.
