MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –More than a dozen soldiers were killed on Saturday when a suicide attacker drove a bomb-laden car into a compound housing the 27th brigade of Somalia national army in Mogadishu, according to military sources.
The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group said it was behind the attack, claiming to have killed more than more than 24 soldiers in the attack, wounding dozens more and destroying military vehicles.
Local media reported that a Land-cruiser vehicle laden with explosives driven by a suicide bomber exploded inside the military base which is located right behind Mogadishu stadium.
Military officials said more than 20 soldiers were killed in the attack and 30 others wounded who were rushed to the army hospital in Mogadishu.
Among the dead included the driver of 27th brigade commander and other senior military officers according to sources within the army.
Apart from human losses, the attack also caused an extensive damage to the base. Several vehicles including a Zu anti-aircraft gun truck were destroyed to an unsalvageable extent by the blast.
Somali security officials have not yet briefed media about the attack and how the suicide car bomber gained access to the base while hundreds of road blocks and checkpoints restricting movement are still in place in the capital.
In recent weeks, there have been reports of imminent attacks on high-profile targets in Mogadishu, with leaked messages shared between foreign missions based in the city warning the possibility of car bomb explosions.
Who was the target of the car bomb attack in Mogadishu?
Military officials have confirmed to Somaliguardian that the attack was targeting the commander of the 27th brigade Mohamed Ahmed Taredisho who was on his way to the base as the blast took place.
His driver was killed in the attack and the commander of the base Hassan Mohamoud Garad (Hassan Dhuh) was badly wounded.

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –A suicide bomb explosion at a restaurant near the seaport of Mogadishu killed at least 3 people and wounded 2 others, police spokesman told media on Monday.
The restaurant known as Lul Yemeni has been frequently attended by government officials and security officers.
Among the killed were two security guards at the restaurant, according to police spokesman who was briefing media shortly after the attack.
Witnesses said the suicide bomber managed to enter inside the restaurant before blowing himself up. The restaurant’s interior was destroyed by the blast.
Al-Shabaab armed group claimed credit for the attack, saying 9 officers were killed with more than a dozen others wounded.
