CAIRO (Somaliguardian) – Egypt and Sudan’s talks with Ethiopia on the disputed Renaissance Dam are not acceptable to go on indefinitely, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said on Saturday amid escalating dispute over the controversial dam.
Speaking at the inauguration of an Egyptian naval base, Sisi stressed that Egypt is seeking to reach a binding legal agreement on the dam in accordance with the international law.
He added that Egypt understands the development requirements in Ethiopia, but stressed that the development should not be at the expense of others.
“Egypt has not threatened anyone throughout history, despite its military power, a small part of which appeared in the Qader 2021 maneuver,” Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said, praising governments who have tried to exert efforts in mediating an end to the tensions flared by the Ethiopian mega dam.
Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry said the second filling of the hydro-electric dam would be a new violation by the Ethiopian side and Cairo would respond appropriately.
“We have the determination and ability to defend our water rights… and all means are available to defend our interests,” Shoukry noted.
