Ugandan Army Says It Has Killed 189 Al-Shabaab Fighters in Somalia

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Ugandan soldiers operating as part of an African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia killed 189 Al-Shabaab fighters in an attack on one of their camps, the Ugandan army said.

Thousands of Ugandan troops are present in Somalia fighting the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab to stop the group’s efforts aimed to topple the country’s central government.

In a statement, the Ugandan People’s Defense Force (UPDF) said that its soldiers on Friday had raided Al-Shabaab hideouts in the villages of Sigale, Adimole and Kayitoy, some 100km southwest of the capital Mogadishu.

“[The raid]… saw the forces put out of action 189 Al-Qaeda-linked fighters and destroyed a number of military hardware and items used by the terrorist attacks,” UPDF said.

The Ugandan army has not provided evidence for its claim that has come after militants took over several towns in Somalia’s south since the US military announced it had completed withdrawal of its troops from the country.

There was no immediate comment from Al-Shabaab on the attack.
