MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –A meeting between representatives of Somalia’s federal and regional administrations and the opposition parties is due to open in Mogadishu on Thursday to reach consensus over election modalities.
A joint federal and regional government committee designated to make recommendations on key electoral aspects has invited opposition parties to a meeting scheduled to be held on Thursday in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
Political parties were invited to the meeting designed to focus on election modalities and adding recommendations to the most comprehensive and viable option as elections approach.
Over the past few days, a committee jointly established by federal and regional governments to make recommendations on electoral modalities –has been meeting in Mogadishu. The views of opposition parties are seen crucial in reaching consensus over electoral options as Somalia’s international partners earlier called on the government to convene meeting with the country’s political stakeholders.
The government and leadership of parliament still continue lobbying support for a popular election that many believe will not happen on scheduled date due to numerous challenges including insecurity.
