MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 8 Somali Special Forces members were killed and several others wounded in a series of roadside bomb explosions near a US drone base in southern Somalia, military officials have confirmed.

Special Forces convoy part of US-trained Danab division was attacked on Monday after moving from US-drone base in Bellidogle onward to nearby Al-Shabaab held town of Lego.

Two gun-mounted Toyota pickups were hit by the explosions, killing a number of soldiers on board and wounding the rest who were rushed back to Bellidogle base; military officials have told Somaliguardian on Tuesday.

The military officials said 8 soldiers were killed and 6 others wounded in the attack.

Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab says it was behind the attack, claiming to have killed 12 US-trained Somali soldiers.

Somali federal government has not immediately commented on the attack, which is the latest in a spate of militant assaults targeting troops and government officials in southern Somalia.
