MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The leaders of Somalia’s semi-autonomous regions of Puntland and Jubaland Saeed Deni and Ahmed Madobe have returned empty-handed from the capital, Mogadishu after more than a month they stayed at Halane base for talks on elections stalemate.
The leaders, who are among dispirited Somali politicians angered by Monday’s parliament vote to extend president Farmajo’s term, held meeting with foreign ambassadors in Mogadishu and informed them about their plans to return to their regions after last-minute efforts to break deadlock over the upcoming polls failed and hopes for a breakthrough were dashed by the term extension move.
The two leaders urged Somalia’s international partners to take action immediately to save the country from another cycle of violence and civil war.
Ahead of their departure from Mogadishu’s Adan Adde airport, the two leaders who are also among them members of the National Salvation Council attended a meeting that was participated by Senate speaker and a number of presidential candidates to discuss the current situation of the country, just a day after parliament’s vote sent a shockwave throughout the war-torn nation.
