MOGADISHU (somaliguardian) –Nearly 10 simultaneous explosions were heard in Somalia’s capital on Thursday night after unidentified attackers threw grenades at several district headquarters and police outposts, local officials said.
Grenades simultaneously exploded inside headquarters of at least 7 districts in Mogadishu as security forces opened fire in response to the attacks.
Wadajir, Dharkenley, Garasbaley, Shibis, Yaqshid, Karan and Wabari were among the targeted. Shibis district officials said they arrested a man suspected of being behind a grenade thrown at the district headquarters on Thursday evening.
The explosions caused unspecified number of casualties, but local authorities have declined to comment on the attacks.
Security forces in the capital closed off parts of Makka Al Mukarama road after a vehicle suspected of being laden with explosives was found parked on the pavement. Police have later confirmed that no explosives were found inside the vehicle following an investigation.
The Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab Islamist group claimed responsibility for the bomb attacks. The armed group often carries out attacks in Mogadishu and other parts of the country as part of an insurgency campaign against western-backed federal government and its allied foreign troops.
