Eritrea Destabilizing Somalia amid Heightened Strife: Opposition Figure

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The leader of Wadajir opposition party Abdirahman Abdishakur said on Wednesday that Eritrea is working to destabilize Somalia amid fears raised over possibility that the country might slide back to a civil war after parliament voted on Monday to extend president’s term.

Mr Abdishakur accused the government of Eritrean president Isaias Afwerki of being a key supporter of president Farmajo’s power grab efforts and the recent term extension that has drawn condemnation from the international community.

The opposition figure says hopes that elections might be held have receded and that he has decided to remove his campaign billboards from the streets of the capital, Mogadishu due to dwindling prospects for fair and inclusive polls.

Eritrea has trained thousands of Somali troops, most of them intelligence agents, which the opposition believes will be used to suppress their leaders and silence critics of the outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
