MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The European Union warned that Somalia parliament’s vote to extend president’s term on Monday will divide the country, constituting a grave threat to the peace and stability of the Horn of Africa nation and its neighbors.
“The European Union believes that the passage and signing of this resolution will divide Somalia, impose additional delays and constitute a grave threat to the peace and stability of Somalia and its neighbors,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said.
“It certainly does not serve the interests of the people of Somalia.”
Several members of Somalia’s international partners called on Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s government to reverse decision to extend its mandate and threatened to reevaluate their relations with the administration, and to consider sanctions against those involved in the move if immediate action is not taken to create an environment conducive for talks to end elections stalemate.
The European Union said it will consider concrete measures if Somalia’s government fails to convene electoral talks to end dispute over the upcoming elections.
